The kitchen, a place both feared and loved by many, is the heart of most all cooking. It also bears one of the most rewarding fruits of labor, food. Food is what gives human beings the energy to run, move, work, and just otherwise exist; without food, we would be nothing. 

While food is, without question, a necessity, most would rather avoid being the ones to cook it; whether because they are unable to cook, are too busy to find the time, or they simply dislike cooking.  

However, the main alternatives to home cooked meals end up being either fast food or heating up processed food from the grocery store, which is unhealthy and costly. I would beg to say that despite the nationwide movement away from homecooked meals, everyone should know how to cook at least one dish (excluding microwavable dishes or simple ramen noodles from a pack).

Whether for the sake of saving money, eating healthier, or to show off to a date, being able to make something from scratch is both a life saver and a freeing feeling. 

I know there may be people out there who would argue that they should not be trusted to cook because they are known to burn water, however, there is always something else you could create to work around those mishaps; like for example, a smoothie would be a good substitution as it takes little effort and is a simple, nutritious, and yet still impressive thing to make.  

Another perc of making your own food is that you can make it to taste however you would like. Dishes tend to vary from chef to chef but by cooking your food at home, you are able to limit the risk of getting a bad plate of food.

For Durant culinary teacher Ralph Underwood, cooking isn’t just about providing food for himself but also providing for others, “I like it when people enjoy food… and then people are trusting in you when you cook for them and I want to reciprocate that trust for the by giving them good food.”
