A CW Limited Series Reflects COVID-19 Conditions

Like many CW shows, this one captivates audiences from the start.

Like many CW shows, this one captivates audiences from the start.

In 2016 the CW aired a show called “Containment,” the show only had one season with 13, 42 minute episodes. The show is based on the Belgian show Cordon that aired in 2014. The show follows the outbreak of a deadly virus in Atlanta, and to limit the spread the CDC sets up a cordon sanitaire. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the series reflects the harsh realities society is dealing with. The show is more enjoyable as the audience can relate to being contained.

There are very few flaws within the show. My biggest grievance with the show is the lack of resolution at the end. Viewers of the show never receive closure for how the epidemic ends or what happens to the characters. While there is an inspirational speech that ends the season, it does not truly resolve anything for the remaining characters.

My secondary grievance is that some of the science is a little messy. The virus mutates quicker than possible in real life. Within days of the outbreak there are multiple strands of the virus being transmitted. Also, when the show begins experimenting with a cure, the rules of blood transfusions went out the window. To receive a blood transfusion both the donor and the recipient must have the same blood type, otherwise the antibodies will attack the new blood, hurting the recipient rather than helping.

The show does a lot of things very well. The characters are one of the show’s best aspects. There is so much diversity, various races, ages and socio-economic classes represented within the show. The characters are easy to relate to and sympathize with. For example, one of the protagonists, Major Lex Carnahan, is just a police officer trying to do his duties, while dealing with the fact that the love of his life is stuck within the cordon. Many people during social distancing can relate to being separated from loved ones.

The show also does a good job of showing how the government would handle an epidemic. The government takes the necessary action to prevent the spread of the virus. They kept the cordon up and encouraged isolation, despite the anger of those being quarantined, the government remained firm in their solutions, something our governments can learn from.

The show also does a wonderful job of showing how dangerous a virus can be. The show takes the time to explain how the virus is spread so easily in an urban society, the show emphasizes the spread of the disease through all bodily fluids. A sneeze or a kiss would be enough to get infected.

In addition to the transmission, the show explains the origins of the virus and how it was created, but that would be a major spoiler. The origins of the virus, the conspiracy and the truth are both real fears of the government and general public. The virus itself is not a major spoiler, so the virus is a manipulated strand of avian flu. This shows the dangers of manipulating diseases because it could escape and start an epidemic,

While the disease in the show is quite gruesome as the deaths involve blood and whole body tremors, it is still an interesting show that combines sci-fi, romance, action and drama. While not all characters receive happy endings, the show is worth the investment. If you are bored during social distancing, it is one of many CW shows that can be found on Netflix.

More Ideas to Pass Time in Quarantine

America is now a month into a shutdown; schools, restaurants and bars are all closed. There’s no sports for the foreseeable future, and to some it feels like the sky is falling. Well I have news for you: Life will go on, no matter how boring it gets.

So with all this free time you have your first thought is probably, “What do I do now?” Well you came to the right place because today I will be giving you ideas of how to pass time during your quarantine break. So, with that being said, let’s dive in.

Make Sure You Have Supplies

Number one make sure you have enough things such as non-perishable foods, Lysol wipes, and toilet paper so you can be okay at home for a while without leaving the house. It wouldn’t hurt to get cooking supplies either so you don’t have to get take out from a place that might be contaminated. This alone could take up a whole day due to the supply not being able to keep up with mass demand.

Time to Binge Watch

Have you been wanting to watch “Better Call Saul” but haven’t had the time? Well now is your time to shine. Get on Netflix and finish that show you’ve been wanting to watch. Want to prepare for season 8 of the Clone Wars? Well there’s no better time than now to watch seasons 1-7. If you let yourself fall down into the depths of the Netflix abyss, the coronavirus will be gone in a jiffy.

Watch Old Sports Highlights

To all the sports fans out there desperately needing to watch their team play, look no further than YouTube. Just google your team and I’m positive there will be a video for you to watch. Whether it be postseason highlights, a blooper reel, or Stephen A. Smith yelling at Max Kellerman, there’s plenty for you to watch to pass the time.

Become an Epic Gamer

Whether you’re getting that diamond in MLB The Show or completing the battle pass in Fortnite now’s your time to get on the grind. As a gamer myself I know how quickly the hours can wither away when you’re getting crushed for hours on end in Call of Duty. Corona can’t get to you if you don’t leave your room the whole day because you were busy playing 2K. Be productive during break and cement yourself as a gaming legend.

Catch Up on Sleep

Life can be stressful, so when you get an ultra-long break like this take advantage and regain some sleep you’ve been missing. Been having to worry about homework for 4 AP classes? Deadlines are now more flexible, so take a break, kick back, relax and get some sleep.

Hopefully this helped you pass the time during your quarantine. These are tough times we’re living in right now so do what you can to stay positive. However, the most important thing you should do to pass the time is to STAY SAFE. While that may not eat up hours like Netflix does it should be priority number one. Stay healthy people, and enjoy your quarantine break.

Series Returning to Netflix in March

Greenhouse Acaddemy is based on an old Israeli television show called “The Greenhouse.” The show is also filmed in Israel.

On February 18, Netflix announced the release of new seasons for some of their most popular Netflix originals. Each new season will be released in mid-March.

The first show Netflix announced was their international series, “Elite,” originating in Spain. The show follows the life of the students of an elite private school, where three poor students attend on scholarship as a result of a freak accident at their previous school.

The first season retraces the steps of all the main characters leading up to a murder, the second season retraces the students’ steps leading up to a missing person. This will be the show’s third season and based on the trailer, the season will follow the students’ lives leading up to another murder.

Fans did not have to wait long for Netflix to bring this third season to the screen, as season two was released on September 6, 2019, only creating a six month wait. The third season will be on Netflix on March 13, in time for many students to binge while on Spring Break.

Based on teasers released on the show’s Instagram, there are at least two new characters, which seems to be consistent, as two more characters were added at the start of season two season which males sense as characters die or go missing during the season. As of yet the roles of the new characters is unknown. Fans can find their names and the trailer on the show’s Instagram page.

The second show Netflix announced a release date for is the popular show “On My Block.” Fans of this show have waited almost a year for the release date of the next season. Like “Elite,” the new season of “On My Block” will be its third. The third season will be available for viewers on March 11.

The show is about living in the “ghetto,” a neighborhood riddled with gangs and violence. The show pokes fun at the stereotypes but also shows both the good and awful parts of living in these kinds of neighborhoods by solving the riddles of the neighborhood. Based on the recently released trailer, the main charachters have been kidnapped and have to solve another riddle to save their lives.

The third show Netflix announced a release date for is the show “Greenhouse Academy.” Fans of the show had a shorter wait than “Elite” fans, as season three of “Greenhouse Academy” was released October 25, 2019.

It seems Netflix did not want upset fans with a second extended wait, as there was a year and half wait between season two and three. The fourth season of “Greenhouse Academy” will be released on March 20.

The show centers around a competitive school for the intelligently and athletically gifted. There are  nefarious activities going on behind the scenes and the students will use their skills to uncover the truth. Not much is known about the fourth season as Netflix has not released a season trailer as of yet.

All of these shows center around the life of teenagers in a variety of situations and contexts. Fans are ecstatic for the upcoming seasons of these shows. These are among the top watched Netflix original series. March will be an excellent month for those who enjoy binge watching.

Netflix Navarro’s Cheer Essence

Cheer was uploaded to Netflix on January 8, 2020. Fans are already eager for a season two.

Madeline Hull

Cheer was uploaded to Netflix on January 8, 2020. Fans are already eager for a season two.

The show “Cheer” was added to Netflix in 2020, many cheerleaders have become fans and are hoping for a second season after the first season unlike “Cheer Squad”.

“Cheer Squad” was released in 2016Netflix released one season of the show and it was discontinued soon after. Many fans were disappointed to see that the show was cancelled after forming attachments to the athletes throughout the seasonThe viewers consisted mostly of cheerleaders, coaches, and parents that have kids involved or wanting to be involved in the sport. They were able to relate closely with the athletes while they improve on their skills during practice and competitions. Being able to see how the team handled tough practices and how they were able to bond with their coaches and teammates to work together.

The new series “Cheer” captures Navarro’s college cheer team during practices, school functions, and competitions. It shows how the athletes keep up with cheer and college studies but also largely capitalizes how hard each athlete trainand dedicatethemselves to being part of this incredible team. Navarro cheer holds the title of 2019 NCA national champions along with more awards from years past. NCA is their biggest competition, which is held oceanside in Daytona Beach, which the series spotlights the team preparing for as the season continues.

The Navarro team consists of fourteen female athletes and twenty-four males that represent their school as fellow Bulldogs. Their co-ed team has become very wellknown as a big part of the community in Corsicana, Texas. Many of the athletes have helped around Corsicana to raise money for funding and good causes relevant to their community.

Navarro’s head coach Monica Aldama has been coaching the cheerleading team for twenty-four years and has made a huge difference in the standard at Navarro. She has turned the college cheer team in a gold standard for the cheer world. Aldama has become the icon of cheer coaches throughout many other cheer gyms. She holds her athletes to a much higher standard then the rest of Navarro students. As seen in the series she has pushed her athletes to be the best and has trained them with laborious conditioning to stay in shape and can carry out such difficult routines. With thousands of people watching Navarro they have extremely high expectations to uphold.

She not only has made a difference in the cheer world but in her athletes as well. The producers of “Cheer” have included highlights on how much she cares and helps her cheerleaders through there rough spots or pasts. Many times, on the show they have shown the cheerleaders past before they tried out for Navarro and how many of them have gone through hard past before they met Monica, who has helped them grow form what they went through. As a coach she steps up for them and creates a safe place, she makes sure her athletes grow in confidence and make better decisions with the help of the coaches and teammates.

Viewers have created on screen bonds with many of the athletes and expect for Netflix to continue with the series. Many of the scenarios that have been included in the episodes have created a way to connect with other cheerleaders through personal experiences and sports opportunities while creating role models through the show.

Trump attempts to investigate former President and First Lady Obama

This is the poster for the first movie fromHigher Ground Productions featured on Netflix.

Barack and Michelle Obama have recently resurfaced in the White House. This caught social media’s attention when they informed the public on their plans after serving their two terms as President and First Lady. Their plans include book deals and Netflix partnerships, both first announced in May 2018. Both ventures will give the public an inside look as to what it was like being the first African American President and First Lady.

It was not a huge surprise when the couple announced their Netflix deal, since entertainment and politics are becoming increasingly intertwined. The Obamas created the joint production company, Higher Ground, to capture inspirational stories that will include controversial topics that the Obama family have experienced throughout the years.

Their goal is to create  entertainment for a variety of ages, they believe their series will contain something for everyone to enjoy. Over the next couple of years, the Higher Ground production company will be releasing a number of series: American Factory, Bloom, Frederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom, Overlooked, Listen to Your Vegetables and Eat Your Parents, Fifth Risk and Crip Camp.

With the controversial information that will be supplied to produce these series, it has raised some questions with the current President. President Trump wants to advise an investigation on the Obamas’ “ridiculous” Netflix and book deal. With the Obamas’ book deal being worth around 65 million dollars and the Netflix partnership being an ‘high-8-figure’ deal. Trump has asked the government to look into the details.

Trump’s reasoning for this investigation suggestion was to focus the attention off him for a change as he says “…for the privilege of being your President – and doing the best job that has been done in many decades.”

He mentions the Netflix deal on Twitter where he suggests Democrats look into Obamas’ business deals and not his own, as he has been under fire for quite awhile.

As this is not Trump’s first time complaining about the former President, the media was not surprised when he threw out the investigation. President Trump hoped to push over the negativity on his own scandals asl well as the scandals of his administration such as Justice Kavanaugh’s, to the Obamas’ new business arrangement, although deals with Netflix and book contracts are legal and free to carry out.

However, Trump’s attempt to deflect negativity about himself onto the Obamas might have failed greatly. The widespread use of social media networking has come back to say that if the investigation was turned around onto some of the tweets and plans Trump has made, this battle would be fast ending.

Stranger Things Two coming out this summer

Last year, Stranger Things season two left fans questioning what would come of their favorite characters in the forthcoming season. Since the second season dropped last October, fans have been anxiously awaiting the release of any information regarding the return of the wildly popular show.

Since the start of shooting for season three back in April, fans have begun formulating theories as behind-the-scenes pictures and videos circulated around social media. In July, the first official teaser for the coming season unearthed a new location in the Stranger Things universe: a shopping mall.

The teaser was in the form of an old-fashioned television ad, detailing the stores that would be available. In the teaser, the Starcourt Mall was advertised as Hawkins’ newest innovation.

On Dec. 9, Netflix released a second official teaser for the long-awaited third season, revealing the titles of the eight upcoming episodes and giving fans a glimpse of some of the season’s themes.

Among the newly released episode titles were “The Mall Rats” and “The Battle of Starcourt”, raising suspicion from fans about the significance of Hawkins’ new shopping center.

There has been no official announcement regarding when the full trailer will launch, but it is speculated that it may come out in early 2019.

The third season of the series is set to hit Netflix in Summer 2019.

Disney to launch its own streaming service

Last year, Disney announced that it would be launching its own paid streaming service in 2019. The new platform is set to stream all pre-existing and upcoming Disney films and TV shows. A name for the service has not yet been decided but many are calling the new service “Disney Play” or “Disneyflix.”

Disney acquired the majority of BAMTech, a technology provider and steaming giant, to create the subscription service in a 1.58 billion deal. BAMTech powers streaming for MLB, WWE, HBO, and NHL.

A 2012 deal allowed Netflix to stream Disney films, but with the announcement of the new service came the news that all Disney and Pixar titles would be pulled from Netflix in 2020.

Disney wants to produce new original films and TV shows for the subscription service. A live-action Stars Wars series has been confirmed for the subscription service. Disney is also planning to create new shows based around characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe such as Loki and The Scarlet Witch.

The platform will not have any R-rated films, and instead these films will be streamed on Hulu, which Disney owns part of. An official subscription price has not yet been announced but Disney is aiming for the service to cost less than Netflix.

Netflix’s “Anne with an E” is a heartwarming watch

Many people’s first thought when they hear an old classic story is being rebooted is “why?” A lot of people possess the belief that classic shows and movies should not be remade, as they fear that the old stories they once fell in love with will be ruined. But sometimes, bringing an old story back to life can have unexpectedly good results.

Netflix’s Anne with an E is a slightly modernized retelling of the wildly famous Anne of Green Gables books. The show aired on Netflix in early 2017, and the second season came out in early July of this year.

As someone who did not read the Anne of Green Gables books prior to watching the show, I cannot say whether or not the show did the books and original movies justice or not. But what I can say is that I was very touched by the show and I genuinely enjoyed watching it.

The story takes place in the 19th century, and is centered around Anne Shirley, a young orphan living in a small village called Avonlea. Siblings Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert decide to take in a young boy to help them with their farm, but when Matthew goes to get the child, he finds that there was a mix-up, and he was given a girl instead.

Anne Shirley is the vibrant young orphan who was sent in place of the young boy. Anne is taken home with Matthew to Green Gables, where she falls in love with the farm and begs the Cuthberts not to take her back to the train station after Marilla insists that she must return. After an incident occurs involving a lost brooch, Anne is returned to the station, but eventually gets to come home and the three are reunited.

The show focuses on many important themes such as feminism, inclusivity, and equality, and touches on important issues such as bullying, self-doubt, and racism. It highlights the idea that we are all individuals, asserting that “different isn’t bad, it’s just not the same.”

Overall, the show gives off a powerful message of positivity and reminds viewers of the beauty of singularity. I absolutely adore the show and am anxiously awaiting the third season.
